CT Scanner

Previously, patients in need of a CT scan were transferred by ambulance to Peace Arch hospital. This was not only an inconvenience to the patient, but also took precious extra time to get a diagnosis, as well as took away valuable nursing resources from the hospital. The 64-slice state-of-the-art CT scanner save time and money; it also greatly enhances the quality of health care now available at Delta Hospital.

On June 23, both Delta Hospital Foundation and hospital staff took part in a quiet celebration, with everyone taking a few moments out of their busy day to tour the CT facility, chat and reflect on the community’s stellar efforts to bring a scanner to the hospital. Raising the $1.7 million needed was not an easy task and the Foundation and hospital staff extended their deep gratitude to the generous community of Delta for the support received during the CT scanner fundraising campaign.

It allows for immediate diagnostic imaging and a fast and accurate diagnosis - ensuring that our doctors are able to provide the correct treatment for our patients and the best chance for a full and speedy recovery. Up to 20 scans are performed daily helping treat trauma injury and diagnose illness. A CT scanner is life-saving equipment and can detect fracture or brain injury after trauma, identify injury and location on brain tissue after stroke, identify tumours and tumour progress throughout treatment, along with many others uses. With a complete scan taking only about 30 minutes, the quick and correct diagnosis it can provide leads to much improved and immediate treatment. In the case of traumatic injuries or illness, this time saved means lives saved.

Due to space limitations and the need for the scanner to be in close proximity to the ER, a temporary module was built between the admitting area and ER to house the scanner and its new staff. A scanner required the addition of highly trained staff including another radiologist, CT supervisor and technologist.
