Thanks to the generosity of the Rotary Club of Ladner, funding for state-of-the-art endoscopy equipment for Delta Hospital is now a little closer. Members were on hand last week to present $7,500 to Dr. Jean Segal and get a first-hand look at the new equipment.
The Rotary Club of Ladner has given the hospital over $52,000 towards the family room, equipment for the extended care unit, surgical daycare and now the endoscopy equipment.
Segal and his team of surgeons perform thousands of colonoscopy procedures a year with the equipment, which is used to detect cancer in the early stages. The endoscope allows doctors to take internal pictures and also gives them the ability to remove polyps without invasive surgery.
The procedure, essential for preventative health care, is highly recommended for those over 50 or anyone with a family history of colon cancer. Patients need only be in the hospital for a few hours for the 15-minute procedure, which is safe and comfortable.
Although there can be a three-month wait list for the screening at Delta Hospital, the wait at other hospitals in the region can be six months or longer.
Delta Hospital is now one of the only hospitals in the Fraser Valley with this advanced endoscope and is considered a centre of excellence in the area. The hospital receives referrals from other hospitals and many doctors travel to Delta to use the equipment.
Although the new endoscope has arrived and is already in use, the Delta Hospital Foundation is still looking for funding for this essential equipment, which comes with a hefty price tag of just over $500,000.
Funding will also assist with a new endoscopy suite, which is planned for April of this year. A dedicated suite will free up an operating room where the procedure is currently performed.
