Jan 2009 - Delta Hospital to find 'unique role' in Fraser Health
South Delta Leader, Jan 23, 2009
The large mound of dirt outside Delta Hospital is just one sign the community will soon have its CT scanner. Another was the cheque featuring plenty of zeros Mayor Lois Jackson happily held up last Friday (Jan. 16).
Jackson handed over the cheque for $500,000 from the municipality to the Delta Hospital Foundation, bringing the foundation just $300,000 shy of the $1.7 million needed to purchase the new equipment.
In the civic election last November, 88.41 per cent of Delta voters said yes to the one-time contribution from municipal surplus funds for the campaign.
“I think it goes to without saying that the people of this community continue to understand what’s needed for all of us,” said Jackson. “It’s quite the commitment really, because it’s about five dollars per person in Delta and people were very willing to do that.”
Jackson touched on how she’s seen the availability of a CT scanner make a difference in the health care of loved ones.
“I spent quite a bit of time in hospitals in the last two years with my daughter, and without the CAT scan a lot of information is not uncovered,” she said.
At the Delta Hospital Foundation event, chair Stephen Millen said the new state-of-the-art equipment will help the hospital recruit and retain staff.
“For too long Delta Hospital has been the only hospital in Fraser Health with a 24/7 emergency room that did not have a CT scanner,” he said.
Millen thanked the community for its support as well as those in attendance, including councillors, Delta staff, police chief Jim Cessford, fire chief Dan Copeland and Delta Hospital Auxiliary members.
Hospital executive director Loretta Solomon said the recent snowfall and frozen ground delayed construction of the temporary facility for the scanner, but the equipment should be ready by mid-March for emergency patients and the first week of April for out patients.
Solomon said the next step for the Fraser Health Authority is to determine what unique role Delta Hospital can play within the region.
