Jan 2009 - Foundation Closes in on CT Goal

Dr. Giri Rao Construction begins and the site is underway

Delta, BC - Fundraising efforts are in the home stretch for the new CT scanner for Delta Hospital. Close to $1.4 million of the $1.7 million needed has now been raised thanks to generous community and corporate support. With the majority of funds in place, construction of the temporary module that will house the new state-of-the-art 64-slice scanner is well underway.

The new CT should be seeing its first patient by the end of March. Dr. Giri Rao, Chief of Medical Imaging at Delta Hospital is excited about finally getting this essential equipment. Rao has been a big advocate for the acquisition of the scanner, so much in fact he recently donated $5,000 towards it through a live auction item at the Foundation’s Moonlight Gala. He was ecstatic to see the Kenyan Safari trip go for an astounding $14,000.

At the hospital since 2006, Rao is more than pleased he’ll finally be able to offer immediate scans to patients. “The scanner is standard equipment and a valuable diagnostic tool”, says Dr. Rao. “Our patients must now wait hours to be transported, which risks lives, takes away hospital resources and has huge costs.”

Earlier in 2008, Delta Hospital regained its acute care status. And with the addition of a CT scanner, the community hospital will remain a centre of excellence and a hospital of choice that attracts top new doctors and staff. Another radiologist, as well as a CT supervisor and technologist will soon be added to Dr. Rao’s team. There are also plans in the future for a new Medical Imaging Department.

On December 1 last year, the new Delta Council voted unanimously to approve $500,000 from surplus municipal funds towards the scanner. A public opinion question on November’s election ballot asked voters if Delta should provide the funding. More than 88% voted in favour. Stephen Millen, Delta Hospital Foundation Chair, was overwhelmed with the support. “It’s gratifying and heart-warming to see that response”, said Millen.

With about $300,000 in funding left to go, Millen has no doubt that the total needed will soon be reached with continued community support. The foundation is hoping that over the next few months further donations will finally put it over the top.
