Delivering a healthy baby is the most important priority for any mother. Although Delta Hospital does not have a maternity department, its emergency room still welcomes a handful of new babies into the world each year. These deliveries are usually sudden or premature. And when the unexpected happens, you need to have the best possible health care readily available.
Speed Falcos, owner of Speed’s Pub in Ladner Village, knows it takes only one complicated delivery to see just how important an infant resuscitaire is. Through the pub, Speed and his wife Nancy have managed to fully fund $25,000 for the resuscitaire, a specialized piece of equipment that stabilizes body temperature and helps to resuscitate the baby if required.
Delta Hospital’s ER staff were all smiles upon receiving the new infant resuscitaire which will be put to use upon the first new arrival. They know just how important this potentially life-saving equipment will be.
“If you can save one life, it’s worth every penny”, says Speed. “A baby waits for nobody when it decides to come”. The new resuscitaire is a much needed improvement over the older model and will be used in all future deliveries at Delta Hospital. The old model needed over 15 minutes to fully warm; the new resuscitaire will take seconds.
In the first few hours of life after an early or quick arrival, it’s crucial for a baby to maintain their body temperature. The resuscitaire features a bed for examining the baby and a heater to prevent the loss of body heat. The smaller the baby the greater the risk it is for them to develop hyperthermia or hypothermia – both dangerous and potentially life threatening situations. With a touch of a finger, the new resuscitaire also quickly regulates breathing for a new baby that may be in distress with a lack of oxygen.
The Falcos’ are extremely grateful for the community support their business receives, noting the pub has done very well over the years. “They support us so we give back to the community through the hospital. It’s our way to say thanks,” said Speed.
Speed and Nancy have graciously donated for many years to the Delta Hospital Foundation for needs such as the ER, extended care unit, the cardiac stress testing lab and the soon-to-arrive CT scanner. The $1.7 million scanner is set to arrive shortly and be operational in March.
With over $300,000 in funding still urgently being sought, community support is still required and anyone interested in donating further to the CT Scanner Campaign can visit www.deltahospital.com or call 604-940-9695.
