July 2010 - Foundation Clears Way For Urban Forest

Executive Director Teresa Cooper and Shelley Slaughter talk over forest plans
The southwest corner on Delta Hospital grounds at Harvest Drive and Mountain View is now the site for a beautiful new urban forest being developed by the Foundation. The open space land has just been cleared of grass in preparation for the planting of a wide variety of trees, shrubs and ground cover, all indigenous to BC. A water centerpiece feature, walkways and benches are also planned for the area.
Dubbed “Forest For Our Future”, the innovative project will provide a peaceful, forested area for patients, their visitors and the entire community to enjoy for generations to come. Recognizing the positive impact that trees bring to a community, the Delta Hospital Foundation is excited about this project because of the immediate and lasting benefits it will produce for the hospital and the people of Delta.
The forest will be funded entirely by a one-time generous Estate Gift by Ladner resident Al Hollinger. The forest will then serve as an area of recognition for future Estate Gifts which in turn help fund hospital projects.
“The cultivation of this urban forest is a unique way for donors to be able to leave a lasting legacy to our hospital,” says the foundation’s Charitable Gifts Manager Shelley Slaughter. “Ultimately, we want the forest to symbolize Delta - a community of strength, peace and sustainability; a community that truly cares.”
