July 2010 - Ladner Rotary Funds New Wanderer System

Thanks to the generosity of the Rotary Club of Ladner, funding has now been provided for a WanderGuard System for Delta Hospital. Club president Guillermo Bustos and past-president Lynn Cameron recently presented $8,000 to Bev Matushewski, manager of Health Services and Stacey Boyda of the foundation for the project.
The hospital had identified the need for a wander system as an increasing number of older patients on the medical floor and in Residential Care had been identified as at-risk and presenting signs of dementia, which is common in the elderly. The average age of these patients and residents is over 80 years of age.
As we age, so does our risk for dementia. In 2006 it was estimated that approximately 70% of those in residential care settings were living with dementia. To address the increasing numbers of patients and residents with dementia, Delta Hospital has implemented a number of initiatives, including the wanderer system.
The new system enables staff to be discreetly notified of ‘wandering events’. Sensors are placed strategically at various exit points and sensitive areas within a facility. Patients identified as ‘wanderers’ are given a small electronic bracelet embedded with a chip which is tracked by software, allowing caregivers to monitor a patients wandering pattern and make proactive decisions regarding their individual care plans.
The system will provide the freedom patients on the medical floor need to walk and move about while still staying safe. This will help reduce the concern and worry of caregivers by providing managed freedom for patients with dementia in their care, greatly enhancing patient safety.
The medical unit was also remodeled to make the environment more elder friendly and help those with dementia find their way back to their rooms. To assist those in Residential Care, this facility has now been equipped with new fences and locked units to prevent elopement of residents.
Over the years, the Rotary Club of Ladner has donated over $60,000 to Delta Hospital. “Our club has strong ties to the hospital and looks forward to assisting with new and innovative projects in the coming years”, said Cameron. The club’s past support has included the Family Room, Healing Garden, equipment for Residential Care, Surgical Daycare, Endoscopy and Serenity Garden.
