The South Delta Triathlon Club has partnered with the Delta Hospital Foundation to support the upcoming Walk for Health. Club members will peddle for pledges as other participants complete their walk around the hospital grounds in the inaugural fundraiser set for Sunday, May 3.

The triathletes will attempt to spin the entire time of the walk, which will be well over three hours. Set on their bike trainers while listening to the band Doghouse, the cyclists will be able to cheer walkers on as they complete each one-kilometre loop of the hospital course.

"We thought it was a unique way to support a wonderful cause, do a long distance training ride and have some fun at the same time," said club president Neil Corbett. "About a dozen members are set to tackle the Oliver Half Ironman on June 7, so the timing is perfect."

Club members have been spinning indoors at New Day Training all winter so have a good base and Corbett expects everyone will be able to last the three hours or more. They will be raising pledges per hour of cycling and are hoping to have over $500 for Delta Hospital.

Walk for Health pledges are also being matched dollar for dollar by presenting sponsor MK Delta Lands, so that would translate into a $1,000 donation.

Corbett challenges other Delta fitness groups to come out and support the event by walking, joining them spinning or even coming up with their own idea.

Participants will be treated to a barbecue and can take in a fitness expo, where local businesses are invited to set up and show their health-related services. The walk is also a family festival with free activities for the kids, including a bouncy castle, face painting, pirate balloon twister and games.

Registration is free, however participants are asked to raise $20 or more in pledges. All walkers get T-shirts and passports that are stamped each lap they complete. Anyone raising $100 by April 17 is eligible for an early-bird draw of a $2,000 Vibration Trainer. The event's top fundraiser will also win a Vibration Trainer, two of which were donated by Guideline Fitness Superstores.

Register for the event at www.deltahospital.com or by phone at 604-940-9695. Anyone wanting more information on how to get involved can e-mail walkforhealth@deltahospital.com.
