Oct 2010 - Delta Hospital Foundation in Danger of Losing Community Fundraising Event!
The Delta Hospital Foundation is in danger of losing one of its community fundraising events, a Cèilidh barn dance organized and put together by the Doghouse Folk Band, unless the community boosts its support for the event. Doghouse began organizing fundraising events for the community in 2006 and past dances have raised over $1500 for the Foundation. The Foundation, which raises money to provide the best health care at Delta Hospital, hopes for better attendance this year so as not to lose the key community fundraiser. This year’s dance is on October 23rd, 2010 at the Ladner Community Centre with music and dancing beginning at 7:30pm.
Without a larger attendance it’s not viable to host such a fundraiser. Last year the same event was cancelled due to low ticket sales which is why this year, if it has the same low participation, it will be the last. Linda Edwards, Doghouse Folk Band manager, expressed her concern over this possibly being the last year for the dance: “It has been an interesting experiment, trying to introduce this type of dancing and music to the people of Delta while trying to give back to the hospital. I still believe that a Cèilidh is a great way of fundraising, but it helps if you have your own venue. We could still continue the dance if local organizations are interested and we could supply the band and a caller”. The dance will continue regardless this October 23rd; however, if ticket sales do not increase it will be the final cèilidh fundraiser for Delta Hospital.
Traditionally, cèilidhs were a social gathering originating in Ireland and Scotland, involving traditional folk music and dancing, which eventually moved throughout the United Kingdom. The Doghouse Folk Band’s cèilidh incorporates many of the original traditions as well as offering a personal interpretation of traditional and contemporary Celtic and folk music. Additionally, a caller, a person who teaches and calls dance steps, will be on hand to support those who might be feeling nervous.
The Fall Cèilidh at Ladner Community Centre, 51st St. Ladner BC is donating all proceeds to the Delta Hospital Foundation with dancing starting at 7:30pm. Tickets are $16 each and include cash bar, free snacks, and door prizes; and can only be purchased in advance. To purchase tickets or to get more details, please call Linda Edwards at 604-940-0844. Tickets may also be purchased from Tsawwassen Arts Centre, 56th St, Tsawwassen (604 943 9787) or from Grapes 4 U at 150-4857 Elliott St, Ladner (604 940 9463). Children are welcome.
