Oct 2010 - Local dentist fights tooth decay through "Candy for Dollars" exchange program
For every pound of Halloween candy a child brings to Riverside Dental in Ladner Village between November 1st and November 10th, the dental office will pay five dollars per pound for candy brought in by kids. An additional fifteen dollars will be donated to the Delta Hospital Foundation to help prevent tooth decay.Benjamin Franklin said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” . Dr. Raj Dhiman believes this and for the second year in a row, he is putting his money where his mouth is – where your mouth is.
In the local dentist’s case, a pound of candy is worth five dollars, which will go a long way toward the prevention of tooth decay. Dr. Dhiman will be donating $15 to the Delta Hospital Foundation, for every pound of candy that is brought into the office. All in all, that pound of prevention is worth twenty dollars toward the community’s health. With the scale, donated by Ladner Safeway, children will see exactly how much they have donated.
This fundraising initiative is all in the name of cavity prevention. Dhiman hopes to send a positive message to Delta’s kids and encourage fewer sugary snacks. Dhiman states “Oral health is important at all ages. Beginning at an early age can prevent problems later in life. What better time than at Halloween to get kids thinking about it?”
Dhiman hopes parents will help moderate their kid’s consumption over Halloween and consider bringing a little of the loot into his office. Last year, ‘Cash for Candy’ raised $750 for Delta Hospital.
Riverside Dental is located on the corner of Trenant and Elliot Street at 130-4977 Trenant Street. Candy can be dropped off any time after Halloween, between November 1st and 10th, during Dhiman’s office hours of 8 to 4:30 pm Monday and Thursday, and 10 to 7 pm Tuesday and Wednesday.
